Coolest Yankees Baseball Cap Birthday Cake (1)

I made this Yankees Baseball Cap Birthday Cake for my son’s 11th birthday party. He was home at the time I was working on it but didn’t want to see it until it was all done. After working on it for several hours, I told him he could come into the kitchen to see it. He walked in, looked around and asked “where is it?” He thought it was just a regular hat on the counter – he didn’t know it was the cake!

At the party, all of his friends had the same reaction. They didn’t realize that it was an actual cake until we pointed it out to them. It was a huge hit with the 11 yr. olds!

This was my first attempt at making a baseball cap cake. I was extremely pleased with how it turned out. The only non edible part is a piece of cardboard for support under the bill of the hat and some skewers to hold the brim in place.

The cake is white cake with buttercreme frosting. It is covered in fondant that I took great care in tinting the precise blue of the Yankees.

All in all, a very successful cake.

  5. How did you shape the hat? What is the bill made from? Did you hand paint the cake or did you just tint it? Is it fondant? This cake turned out AWESOME! I SO want to try it out for my son’s birthday- he has a matching hat that he’s obsessed with.

  13. Would you mind sharing the colors used to get the perfect blue…I will be making a cake like this in a couple of weeks and was concerned about getting the fondant the right color. I’d love to know which colorings you used.

  14. I haven’t checked the comments on this cake in a long time. So many comments have been posted since I last looked. For those that are still looking for more info on how I made this cake – here you go…

The cake was baked in a Wilton soccer ball pan. I then carved it slightly to give it more of the hat shape. It is covered in Wilton fondan that I tinted with royal blue and black (alternating until I got just the right shade). The cake was not placed on a sheet cake or any other cake – it was displayed on it’s own.

The brim was fondant mixed with a bit of gumpaste to give it some firmness. The brim was shaped over a piece of cardboard for structure and then attached to the cake itself with skewers that were inserted between the “corrugated grooves” of the cardboard.

I have made only one more of these cakes and it turned out pretty amazing as well. The birthday boy for that second cake was much older (30 years old) but he was just as impressed as the 11 year olds had been for this cake.

  15. did you dust the cake with something afterwards?
what did you use to make the line details in your fondant?
and did you cut off any cake to form the cap part?
    Thanks for all your help…
