How to Make Garlic Bacon Chicken in a Slow Cooker

Aunt Lou here.

This Crock Pot Garlic Bacon Chicken is fromGooseberry Patch’s Everyday Slow Cooker. We all know that I love just about any recipe that can be thrown together in 5 minutes or less. And, when that recipe produces a mouthwatering main dish that has your family smiling, that make this Momma really happy!

Notes on Crock Pot Garlic Bacon Chicken Recipe

  • I had some HUGE chicken breasts, so I ended up using only 5 chicken breasts, because I cut the extra large breasts in half. So you will need to make the call based on the size of your chicken and your needs.
  • The recipe said that broiling the chicken was optional, so that is how I put it in the recipe card, but let me tell ya people…you want to broil the chicken and crisp up the bacon. YUM!
  • I used my 9 x13 casserole slow cooker made by Crock Pot. It was great for making sure all of the chicken was laid out in one layer and evenly covered with the soup mixture. If you aren’t using a casserole crock, I would recommend a 5-6 quart crock pot since there is so much food in this recipe.

      Hi SMU!

The garlic is in the soup, but if you want to add garlic, that would be a great idea! One can never have too much garlic! Enjoy!

Thanks for recommending the casserole crock pot. I think it’s a terrific idea and mine is on its way. Are there any recipe adjustments I need to think about using the casserole vs deep crock? Is there a recipe book just for casserole crock pots? Thx

FAQs

Can I put raw bacon in crock pot? ›

Mince up all your raw bacon and load into the stock pot. Cover it and set it on low. Walk away. Come back a few hours later and stir with a perforated spoon.

Is it OK to put raw chicken in slow cooker? ›

Yes, you can put raw chicken in a slow cooker! Slow cookers and Crock-Pots are designed to cook raw meats. The direct heat from the pot, lengthy cooking time and steam created from the tightly covered container destroys bacteria, making slow cooking safe. You can put frozen chicken in a slow cooker, too!

Does chicken need to be covered in liquid in crockpot? ›

When cooking meat or poultry, the water or liquid level should cover the ingredients to ensure effective heat transfer throughout the crock. Some manufacturers of slow cookers recommend adding liquid to fill the stoneware 1/2 to 3/4 full. Follow the manufacturer's recipes and directions for best results.

How do you cook chicken in a crock pot so it doesn't dry out? ›

Should you cook bacon before putting in slow cooker? ›

If crispiness is non-negotiable, the bacon should be cooked prior to being added to the slow cooker. Or, as another commenter suggested, the bacon should be added to the soup about halfway through the cooking time instead of at the beginning.

How do you keep bacon crispy in a Crock-Pot? ›

To keep bacon strips crisp in a Crock-Pot, just set it to warm, give the insert a spritz of cooking spray and pop the bacon in. You can also use a chafing dish and serve the bacon buffet-style if you're cooking for a crowd.

Should chicken be cooked on high or low in a crockpot? ›

For optimal results, it's generally recommended to cook chicken on the low setting in a crockpot. This slower cooking method allows the chicken to become more tender and absorb flavors, resulting in a juicier and more flavorful dish compared to using the high setting.

How long does raw chicken take in slow cooker on high? ›

For a whole chicken – Place it in your slow cooker breast side down. Cover with the lid and cook on High for around 4-5 hours or Low for 6-8 hours. For bone-in pieces - Arrange chicken pieces in a single layer in the slow cooker. Cover with the lid and cook on High for around 3-4 hours or Low for 4-6 hours.

How long to leave chicken in crockpot on low? ›

Tender vegetables

Vegetables such as peas, asparagus and peppers can become a flavorless, mushy mess in a slow cooker.

Is it safe to leave a slow cooker on overnight? ›

Yes, it's safe to leave a slow cooker on when you leave the house. The purpose of a slow cooker is to allow you to cook while you aren't home. Slow cookers simmer food slowly, killing bacteria and raising meat to the perfect internal temperature.

Why does chicken get rubbery in crock pot? ›

In addition, chicken breast has less fat and can become dry (chewy or rubbery) if cooked for too long. Without moisture, the protein fibers in the chicken become elastic.

Why did my crock pot chicken turn out mushy? ›

Mushy, mealy, stringy chicken, which is sometimes the result of cooking low and slow for an extended period of time. I've learned this the hard way, after many attempts at cooking chicken in the crockpot on a workday, for 8 plus hours at a time.

Can you slow cook chicken for 8 hours? ›

Cook on low for 6-8 hours until chicken is tender and cooked through. Remove lid and let chicken cool for 10 minutes or so before shredding (so we don't burn ourselves!) Use two forks to shred the chicken right in the crockpot. The chicken will absorb any liquid in the pot as you shred it.

Is it safe to cook raw meat in a slow cooker? ›

The low heat helps less expensive, leaner cuts of meat become tender and shrink less. The direct heat from the pot, lengthy cooking and steam created within the tightly-covered container combine to destroy bacteria and make the slow cooker a safe process for cooking foods.

Will a Crock-Pot cook raw meat? ›

Kornblum tells SELF that while, yes, you technically can slow-cook with raw meat, you won't get your best results this way. You'll have better luck in the flavor department if you sear it first— browning adds a nice, caramelized depth to the dish.

Is raw bacon already cooked? ›

Even though bacon has been preserved through the curing process, it has not been cooked. Like other foods you should never eat raw, consuming raw or undercooked meat puts you at risk of foodborne illness from viruses, bacteria or parasites.
